Windmill

A self-hostable platform for turning small scripts into automated workflows, simple apps and AI agents.

What it does

Windmill lets you write short scripts in Python, TypeScript, Go, Bash, SQL and other languages. It then turns each script into a simple web form, an API (a doorway that lets other programs use it) and a scheduled job, without extra work.

You can chain scripts into step-by-step workflows using a visual editor or code, and build apps on top of them. Workflows can start on a schedule, from a web request, from an email or from other events. Its makers describe it as an open-source alternative to tools like Retool and n8n.

Teams can also build scripts, flows and apps with AI in the browser. Changes go through review before going live, so engineers stay in control of what ships. It can also connect to AI coding tools through an MCP server, a standard way for AI assistants to use outside tools.

Who it's for

Engineering and business teams who want to automate tasks, build internal tools or run AI agents on their own servers.

Can I use it without coding?

With some setup. You can try a hosted version in the browser, but running your own copy needs Docker or Kubernetes, and building workflows mostly involves writing scripts. New to this? Start here.

Can I run it?

Free, with optional paid extrasThe open-source version is free; the makers also sell a hosted or pro version.

Try it

  1. Try the hosted version in your browser from the project's website.
  2. To run your own copy, follow the Docker Compose instructions in the README's self-hosting section.
  3. Write a short script in the web editor and use the form Windmill generates to run it.

Using Claude Code, Cursor or another AI coding assistant? Paste the prompt and it will walk you through the setup.New to this?
