UFO

Microsoft research agents that operate Windows apps, and coordinate tasks across several devices, from plain requests.

Research-backedNew this week

What it does

UFO is a project from Microsoft that lets an AI agent use a computer for you. The UFO² part focuses on Windows: you describe a task and the agent clicks, types and uses apps to carry it out.

The newer Galaxy part splits a big task into steps and spreads them across several devices, such as Windows and Linux computers and Android phones. Both need an API key from an AI model provider.

Who it's for

Developers and researchers exploring AI that controls desktop apps and devices.

Can I use it without coding?

Developers only. You install it with Python and edit configuration files to add your API keys. New to this? Start here.

Can I run it?

Cost
Free, but needs an AI accountThe software is free, but it uses an online AI service (like OpenAI or Anthropic), which usually charges for use.
Runs on
Windows, Linux, Phone
Computer
An ordinary computer is fine
Privacy
Sends what you give it to an online service
API key
Needed. An API key is a password-like code from an online AI service. What's that?
