ThinkRail

A desktop or browser coding workspace built around an AI agent that writes and changes code for you.

What it does

ThinkRail is an IDE (a program for writing code) built around an AI coding agent called pi. You chat with the agent, and it reads, writes and changes code in your project. You can run several chats at once, each with its own AI model, and see the token count and cost as it works.

Each task happens in its own separate copy of your project, so the agent's experiments don't touch your main work. You keep the changes you like and throw away the rest. It can also help publish changes to GitHub and open pull requests (requests to merge your changes).

The agent keeps notes about your project in files called specs, so it remembers what the project is meant to do between sessions. It also includes a code editor, a file browser, terminals, themes and several built-in languages. You connect your own AI provider, such as JetBrains AI. ThinkRail has no accounts of its own.

Who it's for

Programmers who want an AI agent to help write code while keeping its work separate and easy to review.

Can I use it without coding?

With some setup. There is a desktop installer, but you need git installed, an AI provider account, and some comfort with code projects. New to this? Start here.

Can I run it?

Cost
Free, but needs an AI accountThe software is free, but it uses an online AI service (like OpenAI or Anthropic), which usually charges for use.
Runs on
Mac, Windows, Linux, Web browser

Privacy
Sends what you give it to an online service
API key

  2. Make sure git is installed on your computer.
  3. Open ThinkRail, connect an AI provider such as JetBrains AI, and start or pick a project.
