SurfSense

A private desktop app, like NotebookLM, where an AI agent researches, summarises and edits your documents on your machine.

What it does

SurfSense is a free desktop app for working with documents using AI, especially ones you don't want to upload anywhere. Its makers describe it as an alternative to Google's NotebookLM that can work fully offline.

You add your files or folders, then ask its AI agent to search them, pull out information or edit them. The search index stays on your disk, there's no account, and you pick the AI model, either one running on your computer or an online one.

There are installers for Windows, macOS on Apple Silicon and Linux. The earlier hosted web version is being closed, and users can export their workspaces into the desktop app.
