What it does
Strands Agents is a set of code libraries for building AI agents, programs where an AI model decides which steps and tools to use to finish a task.
It handles the parts developers would otherwise build themselves: limits on turns and spending, tools, MCP connectors, teams of agents, memory, streaming answers, safety guardrails, tracing and testing. It runs inside your own program, with no hosted service required.
It works with Amazon Bedrock, Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini and many other model providers. There is also a ready-made 'harness' agent and a plugin to help coding assistants build with it.
Who it's for

- Cost
- Free, but needs an AI accountThe software is free, but it uses an online AI service (like OpenAI or Anthropic), which usually charges for use.
- Computer
- An ordinary computer is fine
- API key
- Needed. An API key is a password-like code from an online AI service. What's that?
