What it does
RTranslator is an Android app for talking with someone who speaks another language. In Conversation mode, two phones connect; each person speaks, and the other hears the translation in their own language, even through Bluetooth headphones.
WalkieTalkie mode works with just one phone for quick chats, such as asking for directions. There is also a plain text translator.
The AI models for speech recognition and translation run on the phone itself, so it works offline and, its maker says, collects no personal data. The models are a large download on first launch, and the README recommends a phone with at least 6GB of memory.
Who it's for
Travelers and anyone who needs to talk face to face across a language barrier.
