Podcastfy

Turns websites, PDFs, videos and images into podcast-style audio conversations, in many languages.

New this week

What it does

Podcastfy takes content such as web pages, PDFs, images, YouTube videos or a topic you give it, and turns it into a spoken conversation between AI hosts, like a short podcast episode.

Its makers describe it as an open-source alternative to the podcast feature in Google's NotebookLM, aimed at people who want to customise and automate the result. It supports many languages and longer episodes.

It uses AI services to write the script and voice it, which need API keys. The README says you can use local AI models for the script for more privacy.

Who it's for

Developers, educators and content creators who want to turn reading material into audio.

Can I use it without coding?

With some setup. It is mainly a Python package and command-line tool, and needs API keys to be set up. New to this? Start here.

Can I run it?

Cost
Free, but needs an AI accountThe software is free, but it uses an online AI service (like OpenAI or Anthropic), which usually charges for use.
Computer
An ordinary computer is fine
Privacy
Your choice: run it on your device or use an online service
API key
Needed. An API key is a password-like code from an online AI service. What's that?

Try it

  1. Install Python and the audio tool ffmpeg, then install Podcastfy with Python's package installer.
  2. Set up your AI service API keys as described in the project's configuration guide.
  3. Give it one or more web links and it creates an audio conversation file.

Using Claude Code, Cursor or another AI coding assistant? Paste the prompt and it will walk you through the setup.New to this?
