PageIndex

Helps AI find answers in long reports by reading a document's table of contents the way a person would.

What it does

Most tools that let AI search documents chop them into small pieces and look for pieces with similar wording. PageIndex takes a different approach. It builds a tree-shaped index of the document, like a detailed table of contents, and lets the AI reason its way to the right section.

Its makers say this gives answers you can trace back to an exact place in the document. They suggest it for long, complex material such as financial reports, legal documents, manuals and textbooks.

It can run on your own computer with your own AI model account, or connect to the PageIndex cloud service.

Who it's for

Developers building tools that answer questions about long professional documents.

Can I use it without coding?

Developers only. Used from Python code with an AI model account. A separate hosted app exists for non-developers. New to this? Start here.

Can I run it?

Cost
Free, but needs an AI accountThe software is free, but it uses an online AI service (like OpenAI or Anthropic), which usually charges for use.
Computer
An ordinary computer is fine
Privacy
Sends what you give it to an online service
API key
Needed. An API key is a password-like code from an online AI service. What's that?
