What it does
OpenSpec adds a planning step to AI coding assistants. Before changing code, you and the AI write a short "spec" in plain Markdown: why the change is needed, the requirements, the technical approach and a task checklist. You review the plan, then let the AI build it.
It works through simple commands inside your assistant, such as explore (think through options), propose (write the plan), apply (do the work) and archive (file it away). The plans are stored in your project so they stay up to date.
Its makers say it works with more than 30 AI tools. For teams, a beta feature keeps shared plans in a separate repository that several projects can read.
Who it's for
Programmers who use AI coding assistants and want more predictable, reviewable results.
