What it does
OpenPencil is a design editor for creating app and website layouts. It can open and save Figma design files, and runs as a small desktop app or in a web browser.
It has built-in AI: you describe what you want in a chat, and the AI creates and edits the design for you. You connect your own AI provider, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or OpenRouter.
It also supports reusable components, real-time collaboration without a server or account, and exporting designs as code. The README says it is in active development and still has some rough edges.
Who it's for
Designers and developers who want a free Figma-style editor with AI help.
Can I use it without coding?
Yes. There are desktop installers and a web version that needs no install; the AI features need your own AI provider key. New to this? Start here.
