AI agents

OpenManus

An open-source AI agent you give a task to in plain words, which then works through it step by step.

New this week

What it does

OpenManus is an AI agent: a program that takes an idea or task you type and tries to carry it out on its own. You run it and type your request into the terminal (a text window for commands).

It can control a web browser to look things up and click through pages. It also has a data analysis helper that can make charts, and an early multi-agent mode where several agents work together, which the makers call unstable.

It needs an AI model to think with. You add the details and API key (a password-like code) for a service such as OpenAI to a settings file. Its makers describe it as a simple, open alternative to Manus that needs no invite code.

Who it's for

People comfortable with the command line who want to try a general-purpose AI agent, and developers who want to build on one.

Can I use it without coding?

With some setup. You install it with a few commands, edit a settings file with your API key, and use it by typing into a terminal. New to this? Start here.

Can I run it?

Cost
Free, but needs an AI accountThe software is free, but it uses an online AI service (like OpenAI or Anthropic), which usually charges for use.
Runs on
Mac, Windows, Linux
Computer
An ordinary computer is fine
Privacy
Sends what you give it to an online service
API key
Needed. An API key is a password-like code from an online AI service. What's that?

Try it

  1. Install Python and download the project, then install its requirements as the README shows.
  2. Copy the example settings file and add your AI provider's API key.
  3. Start the program and type your idea or task into the terminal.

Using Claude Code, Cursor or another AI coding assistant? Paste the prompt and it will walk you through the setup.New to this?
