What it does
Open3D is a toolkit programmers use to build software that handles 3D data. It can load, clean up, align and display things like 3D scans (point clouds, clouds of dots that describe a shape) and meshes (3D surfaces made of triangles).
Its makers say it can rebuild whole scenes from scans and supports 3D machine learning through the popular PyTorch and TensorFlow toolkits. It works from the Python and C++ programming languages and can use a graphics card to speed things up.
There is also a separate Open3D Viewer app for simply looking at 3D files on Windows, Mac and Ubuntu Linux.
Who it's for
Developers, researchers and students working with 3D scanning, robotics or computer graphics.
Can I use it without coding?
Developers only. It's a programming library. The separate viewer app can be downloaded, but the main tool needs code. New to this? Start here.
