Open Deep Research

An AI research assistant that searches the web in rounds and writes up a detailed report on any topic.

What it does

You give this tool a question and it researches it like a determined student. It writes search queries, reads the results, notes what it learned, then decides what to dig into next.

You choose how wide (how many directions) and how deep (how many rounds) the research goes. At the end it produces a written report with its findings and sources.

Its makers keep the code very short on purpose so it's easy to understand and build on.

Who it's for

Developers who want a simple, readable example of a research agent to use or extend.

Can I use it without coding?

Developers only. Runs from the command line with Node.js or Docker and needs API keys for a web search service and an AI model. New to this? Start here.

Can I run it?

Cost
Free, but needs an AI accountThe software is free, but it uses an online AI service (like OpenAI or Anthropic), which usually charges for use.
Privacy
Your choice: run it on your device or use an online service
API key
Needed. An API key is a password-like code from an online AI service. What's that?

Try it

  1. Get API keys from Firecrawl and OpenAI, or point it at a local AI model instead.
  2. Install Node.js, download the project and add your keys to its settings file.
  3. Start it, type your research question, and choose how broad and deep to search.

Using Claude Code, Cursor or another AI coding assistant? Paste the prompt and it will walk you through the setup.New to this?
