NoteGen

A note-taking app that lets you save quick scraps first, then uses AI to turn them into tidy notes.

New this week

What it does

NoteGen is a note app built on plain Markdown files (simple text files with light formatting). You quickly save thoughts, voice recordings, screenshots, links and files as they come up, without deciding on folders or titles.

Later you pick the scraps that belong together and ask AI to organize them into a summary, meeting notes, a report or an article. You can then edit the draft in your own words. It can also answer questions using your notes and build a searchable knowledge base from them.

It connects to whichever AI providers and models you set up. Your notes stay as ordinary files in a folder you choose.

Who it's for

People who collect lots of scattered information and want help turning it into organized notes.

Can I use it without coding?

Yes. There are installers for Windows, Mac and Linux, plus early phone versions; AI features need a model provider set up. New to this? Start here.

Can I run it?

Cost
Free, but needs an AI accountThe software is free, but it uses an online AI service (like OpenAI or Anthropic), which usually charges for use.
Runs on
Windows, Mac, Linux, Phone
Computer
An ordinary computer is fine
API key
Needed. An API key is a password-like code from an online AI service. What's that?

Try it

  1. Download NoteGen for your computer from the project's download page or its GitHub releases page.
  2. Open the app, choose a folder for your notes and add an AI provider in the settings.
  3. Save a few records, select them and ask NoteGen to organize them into a note.
