Movie Data Crawler

Organises your movie and TV files by fetching titles, cast, summaries and posters automatically.

New this week

What it does

Movie Data Crawler (formerly Movie Data Capture, or MDC) helps you tidy up a collection of movie and TV show files on your own computer. It recognises each media file and looks up details such as the title, actors, a short summary, the poster and background images.

It saves this information as NFO files, a standard format that media server apps such as Emby, Jellyfin and Plex can read. It can handle one file or many at once, rename files and sort them into folders the way you choose.

When normal lookups can't find the details, you can use AI to pull the title, actors, summary, cover and other information from a specific web page. You can check and edit the results before saving them.

Who it's for

People who keep a personal movie and TV collection, for example on a home NAS (a network storage box), and want it neatly organised for Emby, Jellyfin or Plex.

Can I use it without coding?

With some setup. The README mentions Docker deployment and points to separate documentation for setup, so expect some configuration. New to this? Start here.

Try it

  1. Read the project's usage documentation linked from the README.
  2. Point the tool at the folder holding your movie or TV files and run a scrape.
  3. Check the details it finds, then open the folder in Emby, Jellyfin or Plex.

Using Claude Code, Cursor or another AI coding assistant? Paste the prompt and it will walk you through the setup.New to this?
