What it does
LightGBM is a framework for "gradient boosting", a machine-learning method that combines many small decision trees, like flowcharts of yes/no questions, into one accurate predictor. It's often used for tasks like ranking and sorting data into categories.
Its makers say it trains faster and uses less memory than similar tools, and can run across many computers or on graphics cards. They note it has been used in many winning entries in machine-learning competitions.
The project moved from Microsoft's GitHub account to its own organisation in 2026 and is still run by the same maintainers.
Who it's for
Data scientists and developers who build prediction models from structured data.
