LayerFS: Gives each AI agent its own full, writable copy of a project's files, with shared history it can save, branch and rewind.

What it does

LayerFS is a file system, the part of a computer that stores and organises files, built for AI agents. Each agent gets a complete, writable "Workspace" of a project without copying all the files. When it finishes, it saves its changes as a checkpoint (a "Commit") and the Workspace goes away.

Many agents can work at the same time, even on different computers, and share one store of history kept in a single database file. They can split off into separate lines of work ("Branches"), go back to earlier checkpoints, or combine their work. If two agents change the same file, LayerFS refuses the second change unless you set a rule that the newest edit wins.

Content is broken into pieces and each piece is stored only once, so many snapshots take little space. Its makers report large storage savings in their own tests. The README warns the store is not protected against crashes or power loss, so it should not be the only copy of important data. Today it is used mainly through a plugin for DeepSeek Harness, an agent tool.
