What it does
Kong is a "gateway": a front door that sits in front of a company's services. An API is a doorway that lets programs talk to each other, and Kong manages all those doorways in one place, handling logins, traffic limits, routing and logging.
It also has AI features. It can send requests to many AI providers, such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, through one interface, and manage MCP traffic (a standard way for AI tools to connect to services). Its makers list security, caching and monitoring features for AI traffic.
It is extended with plugins and runs on servers, in containers or on Kubernetes.
