What it does
AI coding assistants sometimes make up code for libraries they don't know well. GitMCP is an MCP server (a standard plug-in that gives AI tools extra information) that lets them read the latest documentation and code of any project on GitHub.
You just add a special web address for the project to your AI tool, such as Cursor, Claude Desktop, VS Code or Windsurf. There is also a general version that lets the assistant pick which project to look up.
Its makers say it runs in the cloud with nothing to install, is free, and doesn't store your questions. It can also be self-hosted, and there's an in-browser chat for asking about a project's docs.
