What it does
Eko (pronounced like 'echo') is a framework, a set of ready-made building blocks, for programmers who want to create AI agents. An agent is a program that uses an AI model to plan and carry out tasks on its own, such as searching the web, summarising what it finds and saving a file.
You describe a task in one sentence, and Eko turns it into a step-by-step workflow. Its makers say it can run several agents at once and lets a person pause, resume or step in while a task runs. It works in web browsers, browser extensions and Node.js (a way to run JavaScript on a computer).
Eko connects to AI models from providers such as Anthropic, Google and OpenAI, and to other compatible services. It also supports MCP, a standard way to plug extra tools into AI agents. Listed uses include browser automation, file management and automating repetitive tasks.
Who it's for
JavaScript developers who want to build AI agents that automate tasks in the browser or on a computer.
Can I use it without coding?
Developers only. You use Eko by writing JavaScript code; the included examples also need to be built with developer tools. New to this? Start here.
Can I run it?
- Cost
- Free, but needs an AI accountThe software is free, but it uses an online AI service (like OpenAI or Anthropic), which usually charges for use.
- Runs on
- Web browser, Mac, Windows, Linux
- Computer
- An ordinary computer is fine
- Privacy
- Sends what you give it to an online service
- API key
- Needed. An API key is a password-like code from an online AI service. What's that?
