What it does
DeepFilterNet uses AI to reduce background noise in recordings of people talking. You give it a noisy audio file, and it saves a cleaner version where the voice is easier to hear. It currently works with .wav files recorded at 48kHz, a common high-quality audio setting.
There is a ready-made command-line program called deep-filter that you can download without installing Python. On Linux, a plugin lets you use it as a virtual noise-cancelling microphone through PipeWire, the system that handles sound on many Linux computers.
For developers and researchers, the project also includes a Python package, pretrained models and tools to train new models on your own audio. Its makers describe it as low complexity, meaning it is designed to run in real time even on small devices.
Who it's for
People who want to clean up noisy voice recordings or their Linux microphone, and audio researchers or developers working on speech enhancement.
Can I use it without coding?
With some setup. You can download a pre-compiled program, but it is run by typing commands rather than through a regular app window. New to this? Start here.
