What it does
Big AI models are too large for one computer chip, so their work has to be split across many. Colossal-AI provides ready-made ways to do this splitting, so researchers can write code much like they would for a single laptop.
It supports several splitting methods and memory-saving tricks, and its makers say it makes large models cheaper, faster and more accessible to train and run.
The project has been used to build related work, including Open-Sora (video generation) and ColossalChat (a ChatGPT-style training pipeline).
Who it's for
AI researchers and engineers training or fine-tuning large models on clusters of GPUs.
