Claw Code

A command-line AI agent tool, written in Rust, that you can build yourself and connect to AI models.

Fast-rising

What it does

Claw Code is a Rust version of the "claw" command-line agent harness. A harness is a program that connects an AI model to your computer so it can take on tasks through text commands. You type a prompt in the terminal, or start an interactive session, and the tool sends it to an AI model.

It works with an API key (a password-like code) from an AI provider such as Anthropic or OpenAI. A built-in "doctor" command checks that your key, model access and tools are set up correctly. The project's guides also cover local models that follow OpenAI's format.

Its makers say this repository is closer to a "museum exhibit" than a finished product, and that AI agents maintain it. For everyday work, the README points readers to two related projects, LazyCodex and Gajae-Code.

Who it's for

Developers and tinkerers who are curious about AI agent tools in the terminal and are comfortable building software from source code.

Can I use it without coding?

With some setup. You need to install Rust, download the code and build it with a few terminal commands; there is no ready-made installer in this repository. New to this? Start here.

Can I run it?

Cost
Free, but needs an AI accountThe software is free, but it uses an online AI service (like OpenAI or Anthropic), which usually charges for use.
Runs on
Mac, Windows, Linux
Privacy
Your choice: run it on your device or use an online service
API key
Needed. An API key is a password-like code from an online AI service. What's that?

Try it

  1. Install the Rust programming tools from the official Rust website.
  2. Download the project's code and build it using the steps in the README.
  3. Add your Anthropic or OpenAI API key, then run the doctor check to confirm everything works.

Before you install

  • Only download from the official GitHub page. Copies with similar names exist for many popular projects.
  • Plain-AyI is an independent guide and doesn't host or review the software it lists. Please check each project's official page before installing.
  • License (MIT): Very permissive: free to use, change and share, including for business.
  • Keep your API key private. Never paste it into websites or share it, and set a spending limit with the AI service.
